… Svalbard 2014 - Settlements

In June 2014, I joined an expedition to Svalbard deep inside the Arctic Circle with the goal of photographing the wildlife, landscape and settlements.

This gallery shows images from three separate settlements on Svalbard:

  • Longyearbyen is the main settlement and administrative centre of Svalbard. It was also the start of our expedition. Today, it is mostly oriented around tourism and research but one mine is still operating to provide coal to the Longyear Power Station.

  • Barentsburg is the second largest settlement and last remaining active Russian mining operation. It is probably only still operational becuase of the he unique Svalbard Treaty of 1920.

  • Pyramiden is an old Russian mining settlement which was abandoned in 1998 and looks like a "ghost town" which everyon just left in a hurry.

Other images from this expedition can be found in my Svalbard Wildlife and Svalbard Landscapes galleries.
